Laverton Desert Pea is one of those paintings that puts you somewhere specific. The winding red track, the scrubby rise, the old water tower standing sentinel on the hill – it's the outback in full colour, vivid and wide and unmistakably Western Australian. In the foreground, a cluster of Sturt's desert peas blazes red against the earth, bold as anything, while a tall emu stares you down with those bright golden eyes and a chick peers up from below, taking it all in.
