Wendy Binks' There's Always a Clown lines up a row of galahs on a branch against a blazing sunset sky – all rosy pink and slate blue, perfectly composed, and minding their own business – and then there's the one on the end. Crest up, chest out, pink and proud and completely unbothered by what anyone thinks.
The rest of the group has very much noticed. Wendy has painted each bird with such distinct personality that the whole scene plays out like a story: the sidelong glances, the polite indifference, and the one absolute show pony who cannot help himself.
